Season For God

Christian Pondering, Prayers, and Poems

I lay my life at my Savior’s feet. With a heart for God, I pray. With a humble mind, I speak.

The Purpose of Night

We, too, fall
into the cracks of the earth
as if to be swallowed
and forgotten
in an endless abyss.

But you, God,
raise us up out of the depths
to transform us into something
to be loved.

Before your day of reckoning,
when we meet you in the air,
you change us.

We die in the water
like returning
to our mother’s womb,
to be born of your spirit.

Full of the newness of life,
we are born into a war.

We were always in a battle,
unknowing.

But now it matters more
because we know
what there is to lose.

The promise of being with you
forever is worth the fight.

There is strength
knowing that you won the war.

But oh, the traps
of the final battles.

How we fall, again
and again into darkness.

It seems there is substance there,
in the land of shadow and stone,
where there is no light.

It changes us every time
we descend.

Perhaps this is why
you made the night,
at least for a time…

So we know the difference
between you and evil:
between God,
and everything else;

So we can practice
letting go to sleep,
in the hopes that we will learn
to let go, awake.
